Hi everyone, installed a dashcam into my 2016 PHEV this weekend. Hardwired it so it doesn't take up an accessory connection and the cable is hidden. Took some pics of the install and posted them on my site in case it helps anyone else thinking of doing something like this

Yes, the dash cam is set to power on and start recording when it detects power and the power is supplied by a fuse that's connected to the ignition. When the car is started the camera starts and when the car is powered off the camera also powers down.

The cameras continuously record over old footage. The only time you should ever need to touch it after setup is if something happens they have a button that you can press that will preserve the last bit of video and prevent it from getting overwritten.

Jon, On the strength of your write up and the fact I was teetering on getting a Dashcam anyway I've plumped for the same model as you.

If anyone wants to power up their sockets to be permanently live, there's a couple of ways to do it here:

I bought one of these;

This has a mini-USB connector.

No connection with the seller, but am impressed with the kit!

The only "problem" that I had was finding an earth point, I removed the trim form the passenger footwell and found a good earth point hidden under the carpet.

I used the fuse mentioned in the other post, but is only switched live, I have not gone back to it yet to find a permanent live.

Good news, hope you are happy with it.

Update on the VIOFO A119S with GPS mount. The camera worked fine for about 2 weeks then I got an annoying double beeping on an intermittent basis. Tried reformatting the card, resetting all camera options but found by running it indoors straight off the power cable it worked fine. Finally, with the help of YouTube, tracked down the GPS mount as the cause of the trouble. This is a type fault because the camera is such a loose fit onto the GPS mount. I see there is a V2 camera mount now available from certain suppliers and if I do not hear back within 2 days from my supplier I will be getting a refund and buying afresh. I still think the camera is great, just a poor initial design of GPS mount and method of electrically connecting it to the camera body.

I hardwired a Thinkware dashcam in my phev when I got it with front and rear camera

This is second vehicle I fitted it in and I'm happy so far with reliability and features - especially speed camera alerts and it records when parked either using movement detection or time lapse

I fitted blackvue dashcams in previous vehicles but they proved unreliable

I've fitted 4 dashcams in 6 vehicles and it's a doddle - lot easier than fitting a towbar anyway :?
