Had my PHEV for a year now and just about to go in for its first service. However over the last couple days ive had a problem with the charging cable (the one that goes into a 3 pin socket which i think comes with the car). It seems like there is a lose connection somewhere as it will only go on if the charger box sits at a particular angle. I heard that there is a known fault with this and its around £500 for a new one? Surely if there is a known fault they should be replacing them free of charge!? anyone else had this issue?

You would have thought so, but I do seem to have some recollection of someone complaining that they were being charged for a replacement.

Will depend on how you have been using it. Always hanging by the cord rather than flex to avoid strain on the cable connections? Making sure that you're not bending the stub cable too much when putting back in boot?

I suspect most electrical appliance manufacturers would reject a similar warranty claim after a year, arguing wear & tear instead of build defect. :?

Warranties generally exist to reduce the rights of consumers, not to enhance them.

You will almost always be better served by relying on consumer protection legislation.

Amongst all the other elements of that is the test as to whether it is reasonable for the purchaser to believe that the item should have lasted longer than it did considering all of the elements of the purchase. including the price, and the more basic question as to whether the item was of 'merchantable quality'.

They can argue wear and tear and / or abuse of the item but that should be evident by examination of the item and consideration of the manner in which it was generally used.

Regardless of what might appear in the car's warranty it is also a fact that suppliers and manufacturers cannot contract out of their legal liabilities so it doesn't matter if the warranty limits the charger to (say) 3 months....what matters is what is a reasonable expectation on the part of a careful owner.

UK owners: my PHEV went in for 2 year service (24k miles / 38k km) and as the charge box was becoming intermittent, same problem as described on this thread, loose connection inside box. Main dealer took photos, emailed to Mitsu and point blank refused to replace. (they don't repair). claimed "damage to box" as reason for non warranty fix. There are a couple of scuff marks but I charge every day and after two years use the box does have some scuff marks. But given the fault is inside the box its pretty cheap and nasty of Mitsu to deny repair under warranty. Main dealer wants £750 for new one. No offer of compromise. Currently using home wall charger and petrol - with 1 year to go on lease I doubt i'll buy a new one, instead it'll either be a non OEM one or just £100 more on petrol.

By the way, I've always hug it on the rope strap, but maybe it was fitting it into the boot compartment that added to the wear on the neck.

Great car, but with cheap plastics, awful quality of ultra thin black paint and now Mitsubishi using every angle to avoid replacing box (given it works, but you need to wiggle lead to get lights on, its surely repairable just they don't do that) theres no way I'm going for another mitsu after this. Didn't like the fact the dealer didn't do anything to test box, they just took photos to send to Japan so there must be a main Mitsu directive on how to handle these.

Fellow PHEV owners I've met have said the 2016 charge cable is strengthened so Mitsu know this is a weakness. What would I do in hindsight? Clean the box outside up to remove any scuffs/marks - going in with good faith doesn't work like it would with a good company.

Just an update on this since i started the discussion! They actually replaced my charger free of charge. It was however only a year old at that time so that possibly had something to do with it. The new charger does seem a bit more robost however so they obviouslt knew they had a problem.

Had my PHEV since February 10th 2016. Just done 9000 miles.
Same intermittent fault occurring when I plug into any 13amp socket. Everything ok on my external 16amp charger with cable I got off ebay.
Doesn't work unless I hang it up which is not always possible on wall mounted sockets.
Contacted Dealer who said they had not experienced this problem. It is going to be interesting when I take the vehicle in to them to test.
Will have the info off the site in my back pocket.
Very pleased with the vehicle, it is everything I expected it to be. A challenge to get max mpg which I enjoy by careful use of lift/coast and retard braking. I sometimes do get concerned looking in my rearwiew mirror at following vehicles closing up at speed!!

I'm just in the process of organising the installation of an outdoor 3-pin socket as because our car has to be parked on the road we don't qualify for the Government grant for the fancy charger. I'll look at putting in something that supports the box while charging is going on, looking at these reports.

My luck gets worse.
Not only did my 13amp. lead supplied with the car fail after 6 months but now my 16amp. cable to my external Polar Chargemaster unit has failed after 12 months.
After speaking to the very helpful staff at Chargemaster the wall unit was rebooted but the problem still existed. The red charge light in the cab flashed intermittantly showing connection but not charging.
Tried the cable at my neighbours Polar unit connected to my car but same fault showing that it is the cable at fault. Ordered a new one from Evconecters should get this next week.
Charging cables seem to be the achilles heel of these vehicles.

I'm not sure that your tests prove that it is the cable - could equally be a fault in the wiring inside the car. Can you try your cable on someone else's EV?

Thanks Maby
Had not thought of that as vehicle charges ok on my garage 13amp cable.
Will look at going to my local dealer on Monday to see if they will test for me.
Cheers,
Big John

Went to my Local Dealer Monday. No Luck their tethered Chargemaster unit was also down!!
Saved by the bell yesterday as the new - Generation 2 Type 1 to Type 2 Charging Cable arrived and "Bingo" we are back on the 16amp charge. Supplier was EV Cables Ltd.
But cable failures at the rate of one a year at a cost of £130 is going to make my eyes water!!
