I’ve just been mulling over my “career” in cars, and how different the PHEV is compared to anything else I owned before. Yet I am perfectly happy with this car and it has really changed my view on driving.
I started off driving the
*Wolseley 6/90
of my father. After I made a substantial dent in it he gave me a
*Citroen 11 Sport
of 20 years old with 400.000 km on it. I named it Gigi and I drove it for another 100.000 before it finally became impossible to keep up for a penniless student, so I got a rattly
*Citroen 2CV Van,
which literally fell to pieces after a year and I dumped it from a bridge into an estuary (unthinkable nowadays)
The next one a
NSU Prinz4,
Really nice, and after a small inheritance replaced it with a new
NSU 1000
Great car, with a tendency to spin 180 degrees in slippery conditions.
I then won a TV quiz, which enabled me to buy rusted
*MGB,
drove it for a few years and on graduating I parked it somewhere, left it there and made the mistake of buying a
*Triumph Spitfire 1500
(I should have bought a used Mk4...)
Next went bonkers and collected a
*Morgan 4/4 twoseater (Ford engine)
from Malvern. Drove it for more than twenty years with a collection of
*Minis and Gliders
as winter-salt cars.
The worst built car I ever got was a (new)
* Mini 1100
- it needed a new engine every 20.000 kms...
An old
*Citroen GS
which died in a complicated accident that made the front page by breaking in two at the B pillar...
Finally got an old
*Volvo 244
to go with the Morgan which I kept as a fun car. Next
*Volvo 245 Turbo.
Wonderful, but unfortunately very difficult to keep on the road at high speed. Despite strengthened suspension it was only stable on the straight, long bends on the Autobahn at 200 were umm.. interesting. Then
*Volvo 745 Turbo R
Really unobtainium, I had to collect it in Gothenburg.
A Porsche-killer, but most unreliable electronics.
A decline in fortune pushed me into a few
*Volvo 340 -ies and 360-ies,
the worst was a
Volvo 340 D,
which was so underpowered that it got overtaken by its own shadow.
The Morgan got replaced by a
*Triumph TR4
which I still drive, and a
*Volvo 745 (twice)
*Volvo 745 Turbo
After a disappointing experience with the dealer I got a
*Jaguar X-type 1.9 D executive Estate
Which was totaled by an Italian jobo coming the other way, the Carabinieri tore up his driving license on the spot...
and I got a
*Jaguar X-Type 2.2 D Executive Estate
Lovely car, but a relative owning a Mitsubishi dealership convinced me that I would be a financial idiot not buy a PHEV, so after long conferences with my accountant I ordered one in March 2013 with great trepidation, as I had vowed long ago never to buy a Japanese car. And it was impossible to drive one, or even see it, as the import would only start six months later. Being rather back in the queue, my relative managed to get it delivered on New Years Eve, the last day of the most advantageous fiscal regime by bumping a lease company...
In retrospect I find it a pretty good car which I could have bought for its drive and practicality, and I find myself being turned from a petrol addict into an environment - conscious driver. Not a bad thing at all.

So - what led YOU up to driving the future?

Interesting thought to list all of my cars, hmmm

Purple Datsun 180B with a white vinyl roof was my first car
Red Datsun 200B
An old Toyota Landcruiser
Holden Kingswood Ute with Sh!tbox scratched in the bonnet and Wilderbeast scratched on the back
Yellow Datsun 120Y was a home done cut and shut cost me $2,200 AUD traded it for
Holden Gemini and got $4,100 AUD on the trade
Toyota Corona
Champagne coloured Mitsubishi 2.6 Sigma (looked pink to me but was a free company car)

Moved to the UK after that

BMW 318i
Honda Prelude 4WS
Worked for Avis Europe for 5 years new company car every 6 months so too many to mention but mostly Rovers

Moved to the US after that

Had some American crappy sedan, an Oldsmobile
Jeep Cherokee 4.0
Chevrolet Blazer

Moved back to the UK after that (2 car family)

VW Golf
VW Passat Estate
SAAB 9-5 Aero (fastest car in the world at the time for acceleration between 40-70mph)
Lexus IS200
Vaxhaull Astra Estate
Audi TT Convertible

Got divorced back to 1 car

Ford Mondeo
Volvo S90 (ex chauffer car had the works)
Audi TT 3.2 (only car I ever had with a section called "Launch Control" in the manual)
Landrover Freelander V1 TD4 (got a dog, a big dog so had to trade the TT)
Toyota Yaris 1.4DiD (interestingly enough the dog kept throwing up in the Freelander and I had to go to the office more often at £36 per day in fuel so traded it for the Yaris, which the dog could get into as the back seats moved forward and it dropped my commute costs to £11 per day)

and now a beautiful black Mitsubishi Outlander GX3h

Key reason for the change was loved the fuel economy of the Yaris but hated the size, now I get both.

Interestingly enough that works out to about 1 car for every year i've been driving, however signed up to a 4 year lease, hopefully I won't get bored!!

Wow, you guys have had a lot of cars. My list is way less impressive both in terms of number and quality...

Mini 1000 - white
My pride and joy for precisely 1 year until it failed an MOT due to several (probably around 20!) holes in the floor.
Ford Fiesta 950 - red
Served me faithfully for a couple of years
Mini Clubman 1100 - brown
Great little car, not so good on the motorway when 60mph feels like 160mph
Morris ital 1300 - red
Morris Ital 1300 - beige
I was going out with a girl whose brother was into Marina's and Ital's (that's my excuse and I, sticking to it)
Ford Mondeo Mk2 - blue
Rescued from the Morris's by a hand me down from my Dad.
Astra GSI 16v - red
Stop gap after the Mondeo died, fast but a bit rough
Rover 751.8T -gold
Suffered the dreaded head gasket failure but a great car. Pipe and slippers time, but they have a very loyal following and great forum support
Mini Cooper S Clubman - lightning blue
A modern mini this time, my favourite car of the list. Had loads of extras and was bloody quick, not so good on Glasgow pot-holed roads with the run flat tyres.....
MG ZT 2.5 190 - grey
A "stop gap" car that is still going strong nearly 2 years later, a lot of car for £700 quid

Only 2 out of that list cost me more than £1k

On order
Mitsubishi PHEV GX3h - blue, 3 year private lease
BMW i3 Rex- orange, 2 year company lease (shame about the BIK increase in April but still very cheap tax wise)

My mother's 1953 Hillman Husky after she drove it into the gate post while learning with my father and gave up driving for ever! Plus another 1954 Husky with better body but never finished cannibalising the two - both abandoned when we sold the house for rebuilding.

Sold a Hillman Minx convertible by a mechanic cousin & DID cannibalise with a better roof cut from another in a scrap yard - built like Forth Bridge underneath! Slid beautifully on ice & snow :p

Girlfriend's cousin sold us a Morris Minor to replace Minx. Interesting trip to Cornwall on honeymoon with me having to keep kicking under the dashboard to keep the petrol pump going. Minor went to mother's friend when my father gave me his white Mk2 2 door Cortina when he retired and got a new Escort Sport. I put J rims on it with spacers and it got taken for an unmarked Lotus even though only 1300cc.

Now bought my first newish (but still s/hand) car 1972 1300cc Capri Mk1 but fitted out in end of range 3 litre spec complete with bonnet power bulge, vinyl roof, rear bucket seats etc. - fabulous looking till written-off by a drunk driver. Actually sold it to a friend because insurance company left me the driveable car - can't imagine that happening today

During this time also briefly had an escort van for use with wife's mobile disco until I got rid of all three

As a replacement bought a friend's Chrysler Avenger until girlfriend repeated my mother's mistake and again a w/o left with me by insurance firm. £10 for a new wing from the breakers and I sold it on at a profit  Did without a drivable car (but got new girlfriend :D ) and went back to fruitless cannibalising plans with two Mini Countrymans (Men :?: ) but never got anywhere.

Bought a Chevette from another friend when, now, wife produced son - explains why I never finished working on Minis
Meanwhile wife having recovered from her prang wanted her own car but would drive nothing bigger than another Mini (this had non-working petrol gauge - talk about range anxiety  ).

Got rid of Chevette to my brother when wife bought brand new Mini from a work colleague who had won a completion but didn't like it. I briefly had the old Mini until got a Cavalier Coupe (less flash Manta) which started my love affair with 2 litre cars - ooh the power :D
But that went when we moved to London and didn't need two cars.

Then followed a series of company cars - Sierra Estate (written off in gale in company car park - blown about like a paper toy  ), several Montegos (saloon & estate) and then a Escort Estate which I had for 4 years until it expired.

Finally the last company car sold to me on retirement (the first time) for £10k - the Avensis in 1998 until replaced by the PHEV in September.

Started off with a 1959 mini and changed the engine for one from a Morris 1100

Next up was a 998 mini which I made into a Cooper

Moved on to a Mk1 Escort Mexico followed by a Mk1 Escort RS 2000 - Brilliant cars

Marriage and a new house reduced this to a little Mk2 1300cc Escort followed by a Mk2 Escort Mexico as finances improved.

Divorce resulted in buying an old Triumph Dolomite Sprint - loved the overdrive button!

Not sure why I then got a souped up Fiesta followed by a Mk3 Escort XR3!

Couple of BMW 318's followed this and then an Audi Coupe which was replaced by a company car - Golf GTi - brilliant machine.

Finally started my own business and bought a Porsche 944 which was superb.

Made some pennies and moved on to a Porsche 911 (993 - last air cooled version) which was awesome. Sadly not great in snow so I got a Mitsubishi Shogun V6 SWB petrol for winter use. Perfect combination of cars at that time.

Moved in with my new partner (and kids) so both cars went to be replaced with a BMW X5 4.4. which was a great family car.

I missed the Mitsubishi so swopped the X5 for a new SWB Shogun which I kept for 8 years whilst I took chunks of time of work to finish a Phd which meant less income.

Phd done I changed the Shogun for the PHEV. Great piece of kit but I do miss the ruggedness of the Shogun. To make it worse, they had a black SWB Shogun Barbarian in the showroom when I picked up the PHEV which looked great!! Almost changed my mind but the financial case for the PHEV is just too strong.

Took a while to like the PHEV as it was so much slower and handled a lot worse than the Shogun Warrior (Ralliart Pack with 198bhp). A change to Vredestein winter tyres with wider wheels transformed it into a much better car, particularly on damp/wet roads and I'm slowly growing to like it. That said, as soon as a Shogun SWB PHEV is available I will go for that.

Best car - the 911 without question.
Best combination - 911 and a Shogun
Most tax efficient - PHEV

Vauxhall Astra 1.3S - my first car; drove it like a madman, looked after it like a baby, never let me down until rust got too bad. China Blue.
Ford Escort 1.3L - upgraded to a twin choke Weber carb, always had running problems though. And it was Oyster Gold!
Ford Fiesta 1.4S - bought this off my mum when she changed, proper little go kart, great fun! Dark blue.
Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec - my first nearly new car, cornered fantastically, loved it. Silver.
Ford Mondeo 2.0 Zetec - needed space when my son was born, first auto (fancied a change from manual!). Dark green.
Alfa Romeo 1.9 JTD - a bit of indulgence, always wanted one (latest facelift version). Never had a problem with it. Ferrari Red of course :D
BMW 520d SE - first company car, very nice too. Sophisto (?1) grey.
BMW 520d SE Touring - second company car, huge car with loads of space to carry my guitars and amps ;) Dark grey.
Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV - third company car. Still need lots of family and gear-carrying space, made the change purely because of low BIK and resulting huge monthly savings. Very pleased with it so far.

Citroen Dyane ('sporty' 2CV) - given to me with no engine aged 16, built it in time for test.
Hyundai Pony - Original one, in Orange (I resprayed it myself, as it was quite rusty), 1200cc OHC Mitsubishi engine which was bulletproof. - My University old banger.
Mk1 Golf 1.0 - lovely colour beige.
Mk2 Golf GTi 8v - Loved that one, great bit of kit, but got 9 points in 11 months.
Mk4 Golf - Company Car, no choices
BMW 316i - Company Car, no choices
Rover 416d - Company Car, no choices - this was the rounded, Honda model.
Rover 420d - Company Car, first ever new car I had. Awful, just awful (but first car I had with Air-con!!)
BMW 318ti Compact - Company Car, no choices - fun though, and fitted a minidisc head unit to it...
Mk 5(possibly 6, don't care) Golf - Company Car, no choices again...
Audi A4 2.8 V6 quattro - Fabulous, wonderful engine, great handling, loved it.
Audi A8 3.7 V8 quattro Sport - What a barge, drove and handled like the A4, but so comfortable and all the extras for it's day, including a TV.
Range Rover P38 4.6 V8 VOGUE - Lovely car, unreliable as hell, but a great family cruiser and good off-road
Range Rover L322 4.4 V8 VOGUE - Wonderful, had it for 8 years and did 105k in it, way better than the P38, bulletproof BMW M62 engine in it - the ultimate all-round car - 16.93 mpg.
Peugeot 107 1.0L automatic - Bought to go with the Range Rover as an airport/station/central London car - 42.73 mpg.

Both Peugeot and Range Rover sold last month when the PHEV arrived, as it does all the things I used the Range Rover for (long journeys with family, occasional light off-roading for various country pursuits (Shooting, climbing etc.)) but with an overall fuel economy better than the 107!!! For me it is better than both cars in one package for less a month than the other two were costing me in running costs!!!

What I haven't put above are the various track cars I have had/played with over the years (XR4x4, Elise, M3, Exige) but they don't count as they are not my 'daily drivers'.

Looking at getting an F-Type R next year just for fun, when I can persuade her that it is a good idea... ;-)

Morris 1100 - Rust bucket
Ford Corsair 1700 V4 - Rust bucket
Ford Cortina 1600XL - Rust bucket (are you seeing a pattern emerging here?)
Ford Granada Mk1 GXL 3.0 litre Auto - Not as rusty, but unreliable (totally my mistake, bought from a dodgy dealer).
Another Ford Granada Mk1 GXL 3.0 litre Auto - great car for it's time, loved it.
Daf variomatic - 'nuff said!
Mini 1000 - great fun. Rust bucket
Wolsely Hornet auto - idiosyncratic, but enjoyable little sweety.
Rover 3.5 SDI auto - frighteningly quick for me, but nice car. Rust bucket.
Another Rover 3.5 SDI auto SE - as previous. Still a rust bucket.
Austin Montego 1.6 Manual - Rust bucket and totally hopeless manual gear box ratios.
Austin Montego 2.0 GSI Auto - Moderately nice car but . . rust bucket!
After all this experience of cars rotting away under me I went for -
Volvo 760 Turbo Estate - so good I kept it for 11 years and did 260,000 miles in it. Not a speck of rust when I sold it! So ...
Volvo V90 3 litre (re-vamped 760 really) - another wonderful car, but the head gasket blew, and I cut my losses, and bought a ...
Volvo V70 D5 - Nothing wrong with it, I just didn't "gel" with this one.
And now the PHEV. So far so good.

So 17 cars in 45 years, though some were owned at the same time.

Great thread Jaapv.
Started for me with a 14 year old Mini 1000. Worked hard as a 16 year old lad over summer on a building site, earned enough cash to buy it just before my 17th birthday. Loved that car, still remember the numberplate. Was like driving a go kart. Many years of DIY car maintenance without having to plug a computer in to see what was wrong!
Next up a brand new Mini 2 years later. 14,000 miles, [in a mini 1000] was hard work as I’m 6’2” (187cm) so sold it after 6 months and lost nearly 30% of the value, taught me a hash lesson.
MG Maestro 2.0L turbo next, pocket rocket in a straight line, horrific around bends. Goodness knows how I didn’t crash that. UK craze of joyriding kicked in so my insurance soared so sold it. I went travelling overseas so next few years a succession of hire cars, Ford Sierra’s mostly, though a fun Mustang when in the USA.
Back to UK and got a Talbot Horizon (surprisingly good), Renault 11 (oh dear), Saab 99 (indestructible tank), a dutch Fiat Strada which I think was called a Fiat Ritmo (awful car) Fiat Tipo, Citroen BX19 GTi (previous owner had thrashed the nuts off it), Ford Escort, Peugeot 405 4x4 (awesome workhorse and great handling) before treating myself to a Porsche 928 with the sweetest 5.2L V8 giving 320bhp / 170+mph. 4 beautiful years before letting that one go.
Then came work cars and a poor time in car history…Mondeo, into 2 cars, so Zafira + Corsa, Touran + Kia C’eed, recovered some dignity with a BMW 320d Touring , highly specc’ed Passat Estate before new Golf + PHEV.
I love my PHEV but most pleasure: Porsche 928 and best overall: Passat Estate

Great thread.

Renault 12 saloon (Grey). First car that cost next to nothing but lasted about 6 weeks when it fell terminally apart (lesson learned).
Ford Fiesta MK2, 1.4 (Bright Green). Not bad for a young single thing with not much cash to spare.
Renault 21 Savanah, 2L (Light Blue). Marriage, first child and big dog persuaded me that it would fit the image. Perhaps, tin foil bodywork and expensive parts meant that it was a short relationship.
Subaru 1.8L Estate (Vintage Red). My first foray into the world of 4x4s. Impressed, I hung onto it for 7 years and did well over 150k miles across Europe.
SSangyong Musso (Dark Red). Possibly the best trailer/boat-tower/snow-basher to date. 8 years this time and a relative wrung another 3 years out of it on a farm where the rust blended in.
Mitsubishi Shogun (Dark Blue, Light Blue, Grey). 3 in 3 years, thanks to a great scheme with the dealer. Absolutely fantastic, like driving a sofa, but road-tax, diesel and servicing in the UK bit hard.
Mitsubishi Grandis (Grey). Good family car but, to be honest, I missed the stability and feel of a 4x4.
Subaru Forester, 2L XeN (Black). 6 years, 90k miles and going strong but time for a change. It will probably be heading to the same farm as the Musso before too long.
Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV GX4h (Atlantic Grey). Delivered yesterday. I chose it because of the green-credentials and the fact that, in size and feel, it is not too dissimilar to the Musso. Time will tell.....

I'm not sure what all this says about me, but I suspect there must be an uncomfortable balance between cost, utility and image.

Franco.

Fiat 126 (the polish tinbox with 26bhp)
Chevy Elcamino with a Corvette 350 engine and gearbox (backlash from above with 350+ bhp)
Fiat 124 Sport Coupe (great car sorry it had to go)
Ford Sierra Pickup (P100) (not so great and not so sorry it got replaced)
Opel Kadet GSI 16V (fun but cot me my driving license for a year)
Ford Fiesta 1,4 i S (OK for university years, a mouse chewed up all electrics on it)
Volkswagen Bora ( the most crappy piece of sh...)
Toyota Rav4 (great replacement for above, never once broke down)
MB SLK 200k (fun in the sun, loved it)
MB C200k estate (replaced the SLK as we needed more space)
BMW 320d Estate (great car but a bit boring)
Porsche 911 carrera (the last air-cooled Porsche, pure fun)
Porsche 911 turbo (the last air-cooled Porsche, pure fun x10 but running costs out of this world)
Porsche Cayman S (not so much fun as the above but affordable)
Peugeot Ion (bus lane access in Norway :) )
PHEV (so far great!)

It all started with a Volvo 142GL, cheap to buy and easy to repair.
Volvo 145, a lot of corrosion on this.
Opel Ascona B
Opel Record 2.0, shait!
Citroën BX, big crash with this. Not repaired.
Citroën BX, + Lada something, my car, the wife used the BX
Citroën XM, fantastic car this.I had ro drive the Lada.
Citroën ZX, company car
Citroën Xantia, company car.
Citroën Xantia activa. Oh what joy to drive this.
Then we bought the first horse.
Honda CR-V, quite old but worked good
Honda CR-V,
Daughter moves out, no more horses.
Honda CR-V, new, fantastic car this. Expencive to drive, petrol drinker.
Citroën DS5 Hybrid. 1 year old when purchased. Had to visit the garage once a month, kept it for one year.
Mitsubishi Outlander Instyle+ PHEV, black, loves it.

You weren't driving into Chatham last Saturday morning, were you???

1963 Mini 850, just 2 years younger than me and 25% of it's bodyweight was David's Isopon.
Renault 4 Van (the one with the gear lever in the dash), very quirky. NOT very cool.
Citroen GS - disaster - described by my best man as never moving very far - horizontally. Went to the Scrapyard for £50.
Triumph Toledo 1300. Would have preferred a Dolly Sprint but time for something sensible after the GS.
1974 black bumper MGB Roadster. Wrong model but loved it. Described by friends as my penis extension.
Vauxhall Cavalier 1600. First company car, bit dull but very grown up.
(Briefly) Ford Orion. Not very memorable.
First Citroen BX - Shite!
Peugeot 407 - actually pretty good.
BL Montego 1.6, dull
2nd & 3rd Citroen BX, not much better.
Renault 25 - big and flashy but terrible auto box and awful handling.
MG Maestro. Not as bad as it sounds at first but ran it into the ground and then scrapped it.
1972 white MGB roadster - right model this time had several great summers with it and sad to see it go.

Then a break from company cars and things started to get a bit better:

1989 BMW 325i Sport - even with posy gold centred wheels this was a beauty - loved that sweet straight 6.
1996 BMW 323 - not as flashy as the 325 but newer (ex demo in fact) and still that sweet motor.

Back to company car again briefly - Renault Savanne, new name, same car (R25), still shite. Wrote this one off in my last month for the firm!

1996 Lotus Elan SE in Norfolk Mustard. Superb car despite being slated for FWD.
1999 Porsche Boxster - waited half a year for it then had to sell after 18 months as wife got pregnant. Very impressive but lost a fortune on it.
2001 Merc ML 270. First 4x4. Loved it at first but grew to hate it as it let me down so often and so expensively. Soon outclassed by rivals too.
1999 VW Golf Gti - only 150 BHP so not especially quick but nothing ever went wrong with it.
2003 Maserati 3200GT - the most gorgeous looking motor I've ever owned. And scarily fast, when it was running! Sadly just too unreliable.
2002 BMW 330i Touring - that engine again, this time with even more poke.
2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE. The best car I've ever had, would have replaced it with another except that I couldn't justify the purchase and running costs - same model increased by over 50% new price by 2014. Might go back yet though...
2006 Range Rover Sport - loved the Disco so much I bought a Sport for the wife.
2014 Audi A3 Sportback Quattro - finally, a semi-practical car worth driving that we could buy through the business.
2014 Outlander PHEV. Bought it when I realised I could run this car through the business and it would probably cost less than it would to keep the venerable Disco going another 3 years.

The future? Much depends on HM Govt policy with respect to business cars and hybrids. If current fiscal policy continues it's likely that the PHEV will be my first and last hybrid. No plans to change in the immediate future, but I will be paying a visit to the Land Rover dealers in January to look at the new Discovery Sport...

My overwhelming impression reading these posts is that you guys have very long memories and a large number of cars!

There's a handful of cars that stand out in my memory, but the majority of my cars from more than about ten years ago just seem to merge into one rusty, troublesome amalgam. I guess I don't attach much importance to cars provided they keep moving and get me to my destination. I do remember a few very tatty old Landrovers with fond memories - but mostly for what they enabled us to do, rather than for themselves.

Like many of you I have had a string of cars and motorbikes (mostly the latter) but there's only one real fond memory in my ownership history.

107.jpg

114.jpg

I designed a fair bit of it, built all of it and when it was finished I got it featured in a couple of magazines - even won 'reader's car of the year' too

Dubbed 'The Monster' by the family, it is a mid engined V6 with 250bhp and only weighs 720kg - goes like stink!

Bit of a contrast to the PHEV n'est-ce pas?

I'm only in my 2nd month of Phev ownership.
Had some fun last year trying to remember my old cars.

I have had 19 cars in 21 years!!
a few have been Mini's (yes proper ones no BMW's) couple of Rover GTi's (honda engined)
golfs, Audi 80's Primera SRi, and I used to run an Accord Forum "genaccord" my Honda Accord was a class car, really miss it, lt it go for £5oo like an idiot! showroom condition 1998 car!
I was lucky enough to be lent a Merc E220 before I was given the Outlander, that was also a class car 400NM of torque, a real motorway muncher.

I do like my PHEV though!
