In my manual, on page 4-14, it says that the emergency key can be used to start the engine. I assume that's misprinted or mistakenly carried over from the manual for the diesel. Or is there a hidden keyhole that I haven't found?

I think if you use the emergency key to unlock the doors, you can then put the key fob into the slot, and it will be recognised by the car allowing you to start. Even if the keyfob battery is flat, I believe. I await correction by someone who has actually had to do it!! :?:

That would make sense, though I think the manual stops short of saying it will work with a flat keyfob battery (just a weak one). When I have a bit of time to spare I'll take the battery out and try it.

Sometimes on hot Summer days when out doing errands with the Dog in the car I leave the car running and A/C on and lock the car with the key. Surprisingly it barely uses any battery.
