I would change that to " fuel cells are not THE future" - they are definitely a part of the future, along with batteries and synthetic fuel ICE.

I suspect that on your test drive the battery level was low, hence it did that.

You can't force the engine on as such in that way, but using either Save or Charge whilst at high speed will result in the engine being used to either maintain charge level, or attempt to increase it.

I would expect around 45mpg for that journey, provided you charge each end. The short low speed sections do you no favours, it's there where the EV mode comes into its own and delivers the economy benefit.

There is no real difference between pre-facelift (~2015) and post except mostly cosmetic.
