There really is no reason to use CHARGE mode unless you think you'll be needing some extra electric when going up a steep hill with load. Generally, it's an expensive way to drive. For sure there is a BMU reset to be done following by DBCAM.
If you want to to it by yourself an OBD-II wired adapter, MUT-III soft + purchased driver need to be used.

One can basically drive the cat without an engine, so no concern there even if it trows some errors.

Regarding the engine it will be hard to tell over the internet some experienced mechanic should hear it.
