Mitsu does not sell the H7 lamp holder, so If you want to change the H7 to something else, this is the lamp holder that fits the 2016 projector lenses with original H7 Halogen.
And you must use a bulb with metal base.

I have fitted numerous HID kits to replace halogen headlights. From my 1996 Daimler, 2006 BMW 320D, 2011 Nissan Navara, to the 2010 Prius - all changed, all illegal.

The Prius has projector lenses and you cannot tell they have been converted. But again - illegal, for the last 3 years.....

But if there is headlamp levelling and headlamp washing for the original dipped hid beams why is it illegal to change the others? Or are these only on the higher spec cars?

The cars I did the modification did not have lamp leveling or even wash facility, hence it is illegal to swap the halogen bulb for a HID bulb. In the Prius the projector headlamp hides the fact the bulb has been swapped.

I was meaning on the Outlander PHEV not your other cars. ;)

UK Regulations

Aftermarket HID Headlamps
Statement
This document provides general guidance and advice on the legislative
requirements in Great Britain relating to aftermarket HID headlamps. Every
effort has been made to ensure that it is factually correct but recipients should
check with the producers of this document if they have reason to believe any
part is not correct or is now out of date.
General requirements

In the Department for Transport's (DfT) view it is not legal to sell or use after
market HID lighting kits, for converting conventional Halogen headlamps to HID
Xenon. If a customer wants to convert his vehicle to Xenon HID he must
purchase completely new Xenon HID headlamps. The reason for this is that
the existing lens and reflector are designed around a Halogen filament bulb,
working to very precise tolerances. If one places a HID "burner" (bulb) in the
headlamp, the beam pattern will not be correct, there will be glare in some
places and not enough light in other places within the beam pattern.

The following is the legal rationale:
The Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989 regulate the situation in the UK.
Under these Regulations, HID/Gas Discharge/Xenon headlamps are not
mentioned and therefore they are not permitted according to the strict letter of
the law.

However new vehicles have HID headlamps. This is because they comply with
European type approval regulations. The UK cannot refuse to register a vehicle
with a European type approval. These approvals relate to ECE Regulation 98
(for the HID headlamps which are tested on a rig in a laboratory) and ECE
Regulation 48 (lighting installation on the vehicle).

For the aftermarket, a used vehicle cannot obtain type approval because this
only applies to new vehicles. However DfT does not think it reasonable simply
to ban HID in the aftermarket. Instead the Department makes analogies with
new vehicles. It seems reasonable to require HID in the aftermarket to meet the
same safety standards as those for new vehicles. The same level of safety
should apply.

Therefore a HID headlamp unit sold in the aftermarket should:
1. be type approved to ECE Regulation 98 as a component;
2. when fitted to the vehicle should enable ECE Regulation 48 to be
complied with (although no government inspection will take place); and
3. comply with RVLR as far as "use" is concerned.
In practice this means:
1. The headlamp unit (outer lens, reflector, bulb) shall be type approved to
ECE 98 and be "e-marked" to demonstrate this. That can only be done
by the headlamp supplier - Hella, Valeo etc. - who must test the
headlamp in an independent laboratory.
2. Once fitted to the vehicle it must have headlamp cleaning and selflevelling
(which can be for the headlamp or can be in the vehicle
suspension - some expensive estate cars have "self-levelling
suspension" and that is adequate). Also the dipped beam must stay on
with the main beam.
3. The headlamp must be maintained in good working order, kept clean,
and aligned/adjusted correctly in the same way as any other headlamp.

Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 it is an offence to supply, fit or use vehicle
parts which are not legal.

In summary: it is not permitted to convert an existing halogen headlamp unit for
use with HID bulbs. The entire headlamp unit must be replaced with one
designed and approved for use with HID bulbs and it must be installed in
accordance with the rules stated above.

Here in the Netherlands is's legal.

Does anyone know how to the the conversion and where to order the H7 plug's to fit?

Rather easy, on right side you have to remove the filler for the washer, on the left side one relay box, simple.
Little tricky to get the lamp in Place as you have to have 30cm long fingers, but no more complicated compare to change your normal H7 lamp.
You must use a xenon lamp with metal base, and you can purchase the lamp holder on ebay or Aliexpress or similar, search for lamp holder for Kia, they use the same on some models.

You can buy conversion kits to HID for the main beam at any car shop.

Not for the MY2016 Jaap...
Ik build in more then 50 HID conversion kits. But the 2016 has a special socjtet that is screwing in the armor of the headlight. Not an default h7 or h4 but wtih the adapter as in the opening post.
A normal HID kit doenst fith in that, besides, even if it fit, it's way to long...

I had to test the result when converting to Xenon, result is actually good. First photo with original halogen, second photo one Halogen one Xenon, last photo Xenon.
The light pattern is good, no dusturbances outside the light area.
Using the plastic holders for the lamp, and Xenon lamp 5000K with metal base.

Do you have the 2016 model?
Can you please tell me the parts you used?

If you ahve the 2016, how did you solve to fit the screw cap to close the lamp? Drilled and sealed?

Yes, 2016 new model.
Plastic holder as in my first post, bought on Aliexpress, Xenon lamp H7 5000K, with metal base, 35W CAN-BUS ballast.
I purchased new lids from Mitsu and drilled+ sealed, they where the most expensive in this whole upgrade.
Full beam also upgraded with 55W xenon.

It will always safe to use LED headlights. Because LED light has so many advantages. Modern LED technology has completely changed the lighting world it used by many people. LED lights come incorporated with heat control feature. I also use LED lights in my car. I purchase these lights from Jdmastar. Since LED headlights are highly cost-effective, most of the modern vehicle owners prefer using it.

@steve
You know which LED lights can be used because of the holder?
When I look on the JD site the 2016 Outlander is not there.
Dunno If I can you reguler H7's

I really prefer LED's but don't habe a clue how to get it fitted because of the base.
The cheap LED's that can plug into H7 don't have enough power.
The better LED's have a big base...

@martin
Do you have a partnumber of the lid?
What did you used for the full beam?

The part no for the lids i purchased was 8301C683 for the full beam, and 8301D004 for the low beam.
I have mounted CAN-BUS 55W xenon on full beam.

It may be wise to check RFI levels with LED main beam replacements. I have opted for HID replacements and RFI was lower. We still have AM radio away from major cities in AUS and LED replacements wiped out all reception.

@MartinH
Could you please post once again what type of holder and bulbs you purchased to replace H7 bulbs with HID in 2016 PHEV please?
Pictures are not available anymore.

Late to the post but just got a 2020 phev. Would love it if you could repost a picture of the h7 retainer. Thanks
