I need to replace the rear tyres on my 2014 GX4h due to wear. They are Toyo R37s. Fronts are Hankook. I have read earlier posts which seem a little contradictory.....some say you need to have all four tyres the same, while others suggest it is not a problem as long as they match on the axle and are same size and rating all round. Advice welcome!
 
The problem seems to be the S-AWC electronics' response to different-sized tyres. The system measures the rotational speed of each wheel, and if one differs by more than a set amount, it assumes that tyre is slipping/spinning and tries to stop it. If it detects that a tyre is doing this continually, it assumes there's an error, flags it up and may reduce performance.

A new tyre with a larger rolling radius will obviously rotate more slowly than an old worn one, so even replacing both tyres on a single axle might flag up an issue with the S-AWC front to rear. The good news is that his seems to be quite rare from anecdotal evidence, and indeed mine was happily running new Hankooks on the front and part-worn Toyos on the rear when I bought it from a Mitsubishi dealer.

The front tyres seem to wear more quickly that the rears, so swapping the old tyres to the back and running new tyres on the front would tend to even out your wear. The problem is that many tyre places won't do this for you for 'safety reasons' as you're very slightly more likely to get oversteer with worn rears, even though S-AWC should take care of it anyway. You could swap them at home if it matters to you...
 
Don't UK drivers rotate the tires every 8,000km to even out the wear? It's common practice here in Canada, and extends the life of a set by a decent amount. I got a bit over 80,000 km out of my original set, and when I replaced them recently, I bought a 5th tire and wheel to use as a spare. The tire store offers free rotation every 8,000km, including the spare, so this set should last 20% longer.
 
I you DIY swap tyres front & back watch out for directional arrows and don't swap diagonally as you will be mounting the wrong way round!

How can you get more mileage out of the set? Yes you will get even wear but all that means is you have to change all 4 at once :idea:
 
Yes, you have to change them all at once, but less frequently than if you don't rotate them. The 20% increase I stated is from the fact that I am using 1 more tire in the rotation, leaving each tire as a spare several times during their useful life. The overall cost is the same as replacing a pair more often, or 4 (or 5 in my case) less often. The advantage to handling is that front and rear tires are always very closely matched in tread wear, hence no imbalance in performance over time.
 
Ah, as I thought, thank you. However, the use of a 5th tyre will inevitably involve swapping diagonally, so my warning about unidirectional tyres is even more important.
 
My all terrain/snow tires are not unidirectional, so diagonal rotation is not a concern. It's important for me to carry a spare, as my adventures take me into locations that road assistance will not go; unmaintained logging and mining access roads and forest fire suppression trails. These often lead to hidden gems like pristine fishing lakes and seldom disturbed hunting areas.
 
Interesting, my winters are (hence the warning to the uninitiated) but my Toyo R37s for summer aren't . Perhaps its a European thing.
 
My new tires are Yokohama Geolander G015, which are all weather/all terrain, so I can run them year round without having to change twice a year. I've had them on the car for 25,000km so far, and they have performed admirably in every condition I've encountered; highway, dirt roads, mud, ice, snow, and rocky terrain that probably would have shredded the OEM Toyos.
