    Catalytic converter thefts

Hello. Theft of the cat is a concern of mine too. I have just had a look under my car and also took a picture. Although access by a ‘skinny’ thief would be possible, without jacking up the car in my opinion, it would be very difficult to access the engine side of the cat without access to the...

    Brake discs

Good points made - previous cars would have used engine braking and yes, Mitsubishi should have allowed the user to select the charging limit. I suppose by careful choice of timer settings I could arrange to have only 90% of a full charge thereby enabling the use of regenerative braking.

    Brake discs

The service and MOT were about £380. The brake work quote was just under £1000. I will get quotes from some of our local garages, ones with good reputations!

    Brake discs

I forgot to say. Yes, owned from new and I did, very occasionally, tow a small trailer with light load. I have been wondering about three possible contributory factors: 1. We don’t use the car everyday and rust does appear on the discs, as is normal, but maybe longer periods of disuse allows a...

    Brake discs

A 50,000 mile service was due because the car is 4 years old. My wife and I are very sedate drivers. When I was younger and drove more enthusiastically I still didn’t have any premature wearing out of brake discs. As I originally said, I have driven many makes of vehicles, over forty years, and...

    Brake discs

Hello. I have a September 2015 PHEV (facelift) which has just had an MOT and a 50000 mile service. The car has only done 29500 miles, but in the MOT advisory notes, under work required in the near future, it states that the front and rear discs are worn and will need replacing. New pads would be...

    Rust

Luckily, In the UK, the warranty for Mitsubishi fitted accessories on a new car is 3 years/62500 miles.

    Door locks and hot weather

Hi Somersetstroller. Yes, sounds like a different issue to that addressed with the recall. At a guess I think the problem you experienced, during the hot weather, might be due to the keyfob not being detected by the car. The high temperature inside the car might have reduced the gain of the...

    Door locks and hot weather

Hi. My PHEV is a ‘facelifted’ version with a 65 plate. I’ve never had any obvious problems with locks, though if something is sticking the first you might know about it is when a door flys open whilst the car is in motion. It is odd that your newer vehicles, which have had problems, are not...

    Rust

Hi. Is it surface contamination from something like iron filings? Stainless steel shouldn’t rust but can get blemishes from surface contamination. The protection plate should be scratch resistant so you could try rubbing the rust with something like a plastic pan scrubber to see if it is...

    Rust

Hello again. I’m pleased to say that the rusty cross-member has now been replaced by Mitsubishi under the warranty. I have attached a photo showing the, now black, cross-member. The job took 3 hours and required all the bumper (fender) and trim being removed. I appreciate that this part may go...

    Rust

There is a product called XCP rust blocker. It comes in an aerosol can and has a flexible, 60cm lance with it. It is £18 a can and there should be enough to do at least the section inside the air intake. I might give it a go.

    Rust

Hi. I have found a link to a workshop manual that has diagrams for bumper (fender) removal. http://mmc-manuals.ru/manuals/outlander_iii/online/Service_Manual_2013/2014/index_M1.htm At the manual index chose ‘42A Body (except phev)’ Next select ‘Loose Panels’ Next select ‘Loose Panel Removal...

    Rust

Harald, yes, eye protection would be sensible when squirting oil around. It’s an awkward location to reach, and position a syringe, so who knows where the oil might go :D Hi NightPHEVer. Thanks for your reply. The car was open-bay garaged for the first year, but now stands outside. It has...

    Rust

Hello Harald. Thanks for the advice. I have some chainsaw oil already, but I will need to find the syringe and some long rubber gloves (and wait for better weather!). Oil under pressure would definitely be needed to force it’s way between the plates and defy gravity. I assume that a combination...

    Rust

Just discovered the first rust on my PHEV :( I was looking into the air intake under the number plate when I found it. Not a trace anywhere else on the car (2.5 years old) and this rust is hidden anyway, but I will have to keep an eye on it as I was planning on keeping this car for a long time...

    Dipstick discolouration

Hi Andy. Becuase of the irregular edge to the ‘discolouration’ I assumed that it was due to immersion in oil. Your idea that the change in texture is manufactured, to prevent oil run off, makes sense. Thanks.

    Dipstick discolouration

I, hopefully, have attached a photograph too. I’m not concerned about engine damage now thanks to both your replies, but I do find it interesting that the oil has reacted with metal in this way. As I said in my initial post, the tarnish will not rub off and appears to be due to a chemical...

    Dipstick discolouration

Hi Rogue. I was concerned that because my ICE frequently never reaches it’s correct operating temperature, especially in the winter months, the discolouration due to the oil might be a symptom of the conditions that cause the dreaded ‘Mayonaise’ inside the oil filler cap. The ‘Mayonaise’ (I must...

    Dipstick discolouration

Hi everybody. This is a great forum and has been of enormous help to me so thanks to all the posters. I have a query about the engine oil on my MY2016 PHEV. I recently checked the oil level and was surprised to find that there is a discolouration where engine oil has been in contact with the...
