Dear all.

Just got British Gas to install my homecharging unit (16amp). It's located just inside my garage door and slips nicely underneath the door and hooks up to the car.

There are on occasions where either my wife's car is in the drive or I park further away, where I wish the cable was a bit longer.

I can't seem to find a type 1 male to type 1 female extension cable anywhere. The best I've come up with is a DIY cable and parts.

Any thoughts folks?

They are in short supply, aren't they? The only place I've seen them advertised is in the US - and the price was well over $200 plus shipping!

Try talking to EV Connectors (https://evconnectors.com/about-us) - they don't advertise an extension, but they must be able to make one up.

Thanks Maby, I'll drop them an email and see what they say. I'd rather they made up the cable.

I'll post their response.

you can't be the only person with a tethered charging point that would sometimes like a longer cable - they could usefully add it to their product range!

Response from EV Connectors Ltd

"Unfortunately at present it is not possible to extend the existing tethered lead as extensions and adapters are not available as standard.
A break in the connection between the vehicle onboard charger and the charging unit will in effect disconnect the 'hand shake' between the two and the car will not charge.
It may be possible for British Gas to install a longer tethered lead. We can supply up to 10 metres but tethered leads can take up to 8 weeks to deliver as they are not a stock item."

Hmmm, not convinced by this explanation - assuming that the J1772 line connector is available, there is no reason for an extension cable to "break the connection between the vehicle on-board charger and the charging unit..." - oh well...
