LED Foglamp with LED Daytime Running Lights

Thinking of buying a PHEV. Is it worth buying the LED Foglamp with LED Daytime Running Lights option? What is standard? Normal foglamp & running lights?

We had the Mitsubishi option fitted at around £250. I'm not a great lover of Daytime Running Lights but, since there was no option to not have them at all, I figured that we would want to minimise current drain in order to maximise EV range.

Personally I would go for it if self-purchase, (i reckon in a couple of years, everyone will want LED DRLs not halogen so 2nd hand sale easier with the LED versions] wouldnt bother on lease as you'd potentially overpay. If you don't upgrade on purchase, they are very easy to upgrade by your local dealer at any point in the future, the OEM mitsu ones are plug and play, a 5 minute swap job.
Once you've bought it, the sidelight (position light) is a 2 min LED upgrade at £5, and the main beam lights a £20 upgrade. The standard dipped headlights are super, no need to mess with them. Just search the forum 'headlight upgrade'.

Personally I don't think they are worth the extra £300+, from a distance they look no different from normal ones, but that is my opinion. There are already some alternatives creeping into the market and seeing how the PHEV is fast becoming the best seller in some Euro markets it wont be long before you will be able to pick and chose different add-ons. There is a thread on this forum showing one of the after market lights available and at £200 looks a lot better than the Mitsu OEM. So far I have replaced the side light bulbs with LED ones that cost £3 each and look cool! with a white/blue light instead of the dull yellowish huge from the normal bulb. Also I have replaced the high beams with Xenon Ultima's from Ring, giving a better white light when in high beam. I have coming in the post replacement LED bulbs for the running light bulbs P13W.

The only real justification is that it is a (part-time) EV and you want to maximise range on battery. The DRLs are on all the time, so they can soak up a noticeable amount of charge.

Actually the LEDs of the DRLs are not a single bulb. They are a LED circle around the foglight.

That is the case for the OEM LED DRL - the discussion here is on how to convert the standard DRL to LED - and that, presumably uses a standard bulb format.

Just to clarify things here and only referring to the DRL's (Driving lights that are permanently on) there are two bulbs on the standard unit. One of the bulbs is a PW13 and it is this bulb that is permanently on in the driving light. The bulb behind it is a fog light bulb H11.
I have tried to replace the fog light bulb thinking it was the driving light, big mistake as the aperture the bulb fits in is just big enough to let the slim bulb pass through and my replacement as you can see from the picture is much fatter (the club biscuit was use for scale!) . A waste of £8 but lesson learnt! As mentioned earlier the led replacement for the PW13 driving light is on it's way. I have been a bit more careful this time and hopefully it will fit.

I also ordered the side light LED's from Ebay. However, I can't remove the original bulb from the holder. Is much force required? Could mine be jammed? Am I missing something obvious?

The sidelight bulb should just pull out of the holder with minimum force and the LEDs slot straight in. They give a brilliant white light even when the headlights are on.

Noooooo! Stick with halogens - LEDs are no where near bright enough for headlight use and only good enough for sidelights or DRLs!
If you want to upgrade them go for something like Osram Nightbreakers - very worthwhile in my opinion.

EDIT: Actually I may be wrong - didn't realise that LED headlight conversions were a realistic option and actually better than HID these days ...... I really must try and keep up :lol:

Why should you? The dipped lights are HID which are brighter than anything else. I replaced the main beam with Philips HIDs and that made quite a difference.

HID units for main beam? Someone advised against on another thread, due to slow warm up to full brightness. Not sure I followed that, the dipped beams fire straight away, and my old Volvo had them. I never noticed a warm-up phase. What Philips units did you install? I think the standard high beams are awful for a car of this class, although we rarely get a chance to use them for more than a few seconds in Southern England!

In answer to getting the sidelights out (Mitsu manual calls them the 'position lights') they are tight in, but just pull, there is no lock holding them in - unlike the main beam lights which have a small black clip holding the bulb. I did the cheap eBay LED for the sidelights at £5 (unclipping the relay box will make it easier for large hands).

In answer to the which main beam light, I went for the Ring Ultra Xenon's HB3 (thanks Bilbo59) which fire up straight away and are great £20 upgrade, much better than OEM fit. Others praise the Osram nighbreakers or Phillips versions. When doing the main beam lights, it helps to move the windscreen washer bottle, just pull down to release from the lid housing. The headlight cover screws off anticlockwise, the HB3 bulb comes out with a 45 degree anticlockwise turn, swap over, and reverse the process. Doddle!

Thanks for the advice will go for the Haelogen. No Hids for me as they are only on the next models up.

Got a great wee voltmeter for the cig lighter, can be left in as it only comes on with the aux, or "ignition"

Edit: Bought them myself! Already fitted. They were a simple swap. No boring out the reflector or dremelling required!
Plenty of light and well focused by the existing reflector.
