I was taking the dog to the vets the other day - so put a towel inside the boot to prevent any mud getting on the carpet. Unfortunately, because it was an emergency visit, I wasn't paying too much attention, so the towel overlapped the tailgate lock without me realising it. When I got to the vets, door would not open (just got 6 beeps), even when trying to open it manually. I had to pull the rear seats down and take out the boot cover to be able to lift the dog out of the rear passenger door. Luckily while the dog was in the vets I was able to go out and crawl into the back of the car, take off the little plastic cover and operate the lock manually.

Just a warning to all those people who are cramming in Xmas shopping - make sure it is clear of the tailgate before you close it otherwise it may be a difficult exercise for you to clear a path to the release mechanism.
