As a very simple scenario, think what would happen if you open the tailgate from inside of PHEV and somebody (specially a kid) was standing there and gets hit :!: :?: :!:

It will stop... It will also stop if you touch the rubber strip on the side.

Maybe but the kinetic energy would still be enough to cause injury

Kinetic energy?? We are talking about something that opens as slowly as your Father in Law's wallet :lol: , so I think the risk of injury is practically nil - you might slowly, oh so slowly push over a plant pot if you are really lucky :lol:
