Didn't know you could get 90 octane in the UK, it's usually 95, and a super of some kind (98?).

My filler says 95+, which means 95 or higher.

Using 90 might cause pre-detonation aka pinking, which is not a Good Thing.

Regular in the UK is 95. The main benefit with using higher octane "Super" (97 or 98) is that it can give slightly more power at high revs if the engine is designed for it. Not much point in the PHEV as the ICE is designed to run at relatively low revs and seldom demands full power.

Some fuel companies put extra additives into their Super fuels which are supposed to keep the fuel system and injectors cleaner and may stop the fuel "going off" so quickly if you don't use the ICE that often, but they don't publish any meaningful test results to prove it.

And...we still have 87 octane here in the other side of the pond!

91 Octane for the premium.

Is it why we have a bigger tank 51L?

No, it's because the Octane Rating is stated differently (RON, MON and PON)
